The Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina hosted culinary and technology students from Chariho Career & Technical Center and Newport Area Career & Technical Center on May 25, 2016 for a Job Shadow Day. General Manager, Kristine Cox; Food & Beverage Director, Susan Tosun; and Catering Manager, Katherine Ross kicked off the morning by providing the students with stories of their backgrounds and how they got to where they are today. They were informative and inspirational with their presentations and provided a great spectrum of career options within the hotel industry.
The students were then brought to the Marina to hear from Dock Master, Heather Hurley. The students had a presentation from Heather about her road to where she is now, how the marina is still an extension of the hotel and how it all ties together. She then broke them up into teams to conduct a scavenger hunt on the marina, which got the students out and talking to workers at the marina.
After the marina tour, Bleu Grijalva from Hope & Main shared his background in culinary, the story behind Hope & Main, and the future of incubator kitchens in the state of Rhode Island. Students were then afforded the opportunity to hear from Saltwater’s Executive Chef, Scott Rackliff, who also demonstrated making fresh mozzarella.
Overall, the students had a fun and educational experience put on by our gracious hosts at The Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina and Hope & Main.
